Quaternized ammonium salts of alky1 amides of lanolin acids 35-75% in combination with aliph. branched diols 25-65% such as 2-methy1-2,4-pentandiol(I) are useful in hair wash and rinse prepns. The compns. are H2O-sol. and stable even at 25-75% concns. with out turbidity, and are also suitable for use in other cosmetics. For example, purified lanolin acids were treated with dimethylamino propylamine and resultant lanoline amide was quaternized by diethy1 sulfate.I(10g) was added to 50g of the freshly prepd. quaternary compd. and the mixt. was heated until it is clarified, then left at room temp. for a week.
