A device which acts as a retainer to hold a butterfly valve stem (26) in the valve body upon shearing or breaking of the stem. Conventional butterfly valve stems are typically weakened in certain areas such as, for example, the areas where pins secure the butterfly valve member to the stem. If unusually high torque is placed on such a stem, shear failure may occur and fluid pressure in the valve body may tend to blow the sheared stem out of the stem bore. This problem is solved by the instant retaining device which includes pins (44) extending radially from the stem (26) which engage in abutting relation a support ring (64) mounted in a groove (56) in the bore and retained therein by a split retainer ring (70) to restrain any outward movement of the stem. |
