PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate of musk perfumery, in high yield, by the cyclization alkylation of p-alpha-dimethylstyrene with 2,3-dimethylbutene in the presence of a solid acid catalyst obtained by impregnating sulfuric acid to a carrier in an organic solvent. CONSTITUTION:1,1,3,4,4,6-Hexamethyltetrahydronaphthalene is prepared by the cyclization alkylation of p-alpha-dimethylstyrene with 2,3-dimethylbutene in the presence of a solid acid catalyst obtained by impregnating sulfuric acid to a carrier in an organic solvent. The preparation of said catalyst can be easily carried out by suspending a carrier such as activated clay, kaolin, acid clay, etc. in an organic solvent such as hexane, cyclohexane, etc., adding sulfuric acid dropwise to the suspension under stirring, and continuing the stirring. The p-alpha-dimethylstyrene can be completely consumed, and the theoretical yield of the titled compound reaches as high as 70-75%. |
