NEW MATERIAL:This substance is stable in the state of an amorphous and white powder and has an activity of inducing interferon and following physical and chemical properties: elementary analysis: H 7.4+0.4%, C 45.6+0.4%, N 13.5+ 0.4%, P 2.8+0.3%; molecular weight: 100,000-3,000,000, mainly 500,000- 1,000,000; melting point is indefinite and it is carbonized at about 220 deg.C; readily soluble in an aqueous alkali such as potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide, insoluble in water, hard soluble in methanol, acetone or chloroform; positive to ninhydrin, Elson-Morgan reactions; [alpha]D<26>=+73-+79 deg. (average +76 deg.) (C= 0.47% in 0.1N-NaOH). USE:It has antitumorigenic activity and used as a prophylactic or remedy for tumorigenic viral infections. PREPARATION:A plant which belongs to Artemisia and contains the interferon inducer is extracted with water and subjected to ultrafiltration using a membrane that can separate substances of more than 100,000 molecular weight.
