PURPOSE: To obtain 3-methylpyridine compounds useful as an intermediate for medicines or agricultural chemicals or as a raw material for polymers by reacting methacrolein with a carbonyl compound and ammonia in the presence of a specific Si-containing oxide composition in a gaseous phase. CONSTITUTION: (B) Methacrolein is reacted with (C) a carbonyl compound of formula I (R<1> , R<2> are H, a 1-4C alkyl) and (D) ammonia in the presence of a catalyst composition of formula: Sia Xb Yc Zd Oe (Si is silicon; X is P and/or B; Y is at least a kind of element selected from among Li, Na, K, Rb, etc.; Z is at least one kind of element selected from among Ce, Ti, Zr, V, etc.; O is oxygen; (a), (b), (c), (d), (e) are the atom ratio of the elements, and when (a) is 10, (b) is 0.2-10, (c) is 0-3, (d) is 0-5, and (e) is a number corresponding to the oxide in which the constituting elements are bound to each other) in a gaseous phase to obtain (E) the 3-methylpyridine compounds of formula II. The reaction is preferably performed in the coexistence of steam. |
