Collagen-based surgical suture-, i.e. catgut, thread properties are improved by treatment in a soln. contg. isopropanol, water, glycerol, at least one carbohydrate and opt. standard additives. The treated thread is highly supple and does not dry out on exposure, e.g. up to 5 hrs., under standard atmos. conditions. The carbohydrate is esp. sorbitol, xylitol or Na carboxymethyl cellulose. A pref. treatment soln. contains, by wt., 1-6% glycerol, 2-10% carbohydrate, 8-10% water and 70-90% isopropanol. After several, e.g. up to 7 days action time, the soln. is removed and the thread can be packed in standard manner, without preserving soln., and sterilised.
|
