An H2SO4 sludge is mixed with 30-70% Mg(OH)2 slurry to neutralize the sludge to pH 7, then the sludge is incinerated at 750-900oC with a fuel to generate SO2 which is absorbed in a Mg(OH)2 suspension to form MgSO4. The MgSO4 is discharged, and the ash is neutralized for reuse. Thus, a sludge contg. H2SO4 62, org. compd. 30, and water 8 % was treated with a Mg(OH)2 slurry. The resulting sludge was incinerated and the SO2 was scrubbed.
