System and method for managing biological units are provided which include an inspection device for inspecting a biological unit, a mechanism for transferring a biological unit through the inspection device, and a processor for receiving signals from the inspection device. The processor may also register passage of the biological unit through the inspection device, count biological units, and/or classify biological units. The processor is further adapted to record the results of one or more of the operations of registering, counting and classifying. Desirably, the biological unit is a hair follicular unit.
