[Classes 37 and 53] A battery is provided with a resistance element detachably secured to one of its terminals so that the resistance of the circuit is increased and the output of the battery reduced during the initial period of discharge. When the battery has been partly discharged, the resistance element is removed. Fig. 3 shows one form of resistance element consisting of a strip 20 of paper coated or impregnated with powdered carbon and held between a metal plate 18 and a channelled metal plate 13, 14. A paper strip 21 separates the element 20 from the metal plate 13, 14 whore the latter is bent over to form the channel. The plate 13 as shown in Fig. 4 is provided with an extension 15 which has a raised portion 17 slotted at the ends 16. The extension 15 is bent backwards and is fitted on the battery terminal 11 as shown in Fig. 1, the terminal passing through the slots 16. The current passes from the terminal 11 through the plate 13, resistance element 20 and plate 18. In a modification shown in Fig. 9, the extension 15 is of channel shape for engagement with the battery terminal. Fig. 7 shows a further modification in which the battery terminal 11 is provided with an extension 23 coated with finely divided carbon, a part of which is coated with metal 25. The extension 23 is connected to the terminal 11 by a reduced and weakened portion 24 which can be broken when the resistance is to be removed. |
