PURPOSE:To enhance the life characteristics of an electrode during a charge-and- discharge cycle including deep discharge by performing initial formation in an aqueous sulfate solution, before subsequent formation charging is carried out in an electrolyte principally containing a diluted sulfuric acid. CONSTITUTION:The initial formation of a lead acid battery is carried out in an aqueous sulfate solution made of such as sodium sulfate or potassium sulfate by using over 20% of the quantity of feeding electricity which is calculated from the volume of the active material of the electrode. Subsequently, formation charging is performed on the battery in a diluted sulfuric acid. alpha-PbO2 is produced during the initial formation, while beta-PbO2 is produced during the formation carried out in the diluted sulfuric acid. alpha-PbO2 that hardly undergoes any reaction is developed in the inner part of the electrode, while beta-PbO2 that is a highly reactive active material is developed on the surface of the electrode. Consequently, any deterioration of the capacity of the electrode which is caused during a pattern including deep discharge can be decreased, and the life characteristics of the electrode can be greatly enhanced. |
