PURPOSE:To produce high purity gaseous oxygen which does not contain moisture, electrolyte, etc. by cooling the oxygen generated from an anode with a cooler in performing electrolysis by using an aqueous soln. of potassium hydroxide as electrolyte and a gaseous diffusing electrode as a cathode. CONSTITUTION:In performing DC electrolysis by using 30% KOH soln. in an electrolytic cell 1 provided with a cathode 2 as a gaseous diffusing electrode and an anode 3 of Ni or the like, as electrolyte 4, the gaseous oxygen generated on the anode 3 floats by passing through the electrolyte 4, and therefore it contains a large quantity of steam and the splash or the like of the electrolyte. This gaseous oxygen is introduced through a pipe 6 into a cooler 5 using the Peltier element and cooled, so that the steam is condensed and separated with the splash of the electrolyte 4 as a nucleus, after which the gaseous oxygen of high purity is recovered through a lead-out port 8. Since the condensed water contains the electrolyte, it is returned through a pipe 7 into the cell 1. Hence, the replenishing amount of water and electrolyte is less required. |
