PURPOSE:To improve the economy in the view point of apparatus, energy and raw materials, in the preparation of the titled substance from benzene and 1,2-dichloroethane, by recycling the by-produced highly condensed product together with unreacted benzene to the reactor, and converting the by-product to the objective compound. CONSTITUTION:In the preparation of 1,2-diphenylethane (DPE) by the reaction of benzene and 1,2-dichloroethane (EDC) in the presence fo a Lewis acid catalyst, the by-produced highly condensed product is converted to DPE by extracting a part of the reaction liquid from the reactor, separating the liquid into DPE, benzene and the highly condensed material, and returning the benzene and the highly condensed material to the reactor. The amount of benzene is 1.5-3 times the stoichiometric amount, and that of the catalyst is 30-90mol% based on EDC. EFFECT:Since a large amount of the highly condensed material which hitherto has been discarded, is converted to the objective compound, the reaction can be carried out economically, in high yield. As the amount of benzene is small, the concentration of the objective compound can be maintained at a high level, and the separation efficiency can be improved. |
