An improved method for the detection of IgM antibodies against hepatitis A virus is provided. The basis of the method is a 3-stage assay for IgM antibodies against hepatitis A virus, in which plastic beads are coated with anti-human IgM (specific for the mu chain) and successively incubated with the serum sample, hepatitis A virus antigen and with <125>I-labelled antibody against hepatitis A virus antigen. The improvement comprises the pretreatment of the sample or test sample with a dilute aqueous solution of hepatitis-negative human serum, plasma or an IgG-containing fraction thereof.
