In a printing unit with continuously rotating cylinders 10 for printing variable print sizes, the paper web 1 is arrested while recesses for the tension means of the printing cylinders pass through the printing gap between both cylinders; then the paper web is moved backward and subsequently forward, and is accelerated up to the peripheral speed of the printing cylinders.
