Continuous monitoring of converter tuyere wear - using capacitor positioned in tuyere

The wear of a tuyere, fitted in the bottom or side of a metallurgical vessel, is monitored by psotioning an electrical capacitor within the tuyere and determining the degree of wear from instantaneous capacity measurements. The capacitor is pref. positioned along the longitudinal axis of the tuyere and is connected to an oscillator, the frequency of oscillations of which is measured for calculating the degree of wear. The process is useful for monitoring steel converter tuyeres, continuously and automatically, so that the precise moment for tuyere replacement can be determined.
