The invention relates to a gyroscope which is suitable for determining north and as heading indicator. An outer frame which is essentially vertical is supported rotatably about its vertical axis at a housing. An inner frame is also supported at the outer frame with an approximately horizontal axis which is arranged rotated by 90 DEG with respect to the vertical axis. On the inner frame, attitude sensors and a gyroscope are attached. The gyroscope has two sensing axes and the north direction can be determined from the measurement values which can be generated in these axes. For this purpose, the gyrotropic vector axis of the gyroscope is brought into a vertical attitude at least in one plane. To be able to carry out the determination of a heading, the inner frame is pivoted by means of a torque generator in such a manner that the gyrotropic vector axis of the gyroscope is horizontal. The heading value is formed from a tap attached to the vertical axis. <IMAGE>
