A sealing device for sealing a container 19 by the application of a lid 18. A means 10 is arranged for collection of the lid from a store 17, 21 and for placing the lid onto the container. A seal 15 in the form of a ring can be displaced in an axial direction relative to the collecting means and can be placed in contact with the lid 18 placed on the container 19 in a position that surrounds the collecting means 10 during sealing of the lid onto the container.
