The pin (3) carrying the workpiece being worked not only revolves on itself but moves transversely in any direction, its lateral position being a function of its angular position. The cutting tool (18) moves transversely in the direction of the arrow (22) as machining progresses and, simultaneously, moves longitudinally, in the direction of the arrow (23) by virtue of the fact that a feeler (19) is kept longitudinally in contact with the transverse ramp (21) of a template (20). The shape of the latter determines the "instantaneous" profile of the surface being worked. The variations in this profile, due to the fact that the surface to be machined is not one of revolution, are produced by a to-and-fro movement of the tool (18), following the arrow (24), controlled by two cams (30 and 31) rotationally driven by a flexible shaft (28), in synchronism with the pin (3), and which bear, respectively, against two rollers (32 and 34) which a longitudinally movable slide (16) carries, upon which slide the tool holder (17) is fixed. <IMAGE>
