A liquid agent for treating polluted water, for example in swimming pools, water courses and lakes and also effluent water, is prepared in the following four steps a- d inclusive: a) finely divided salt stone or salt-containing mineral ("Haselgebirge") or a mixture of this with a residue from salt-leeching the same ("Werklaist") is introduced, while stirring, into an aqueous solution or suspension of an inorganic base, b) the mixture is stirred for from 2 to 5 hours, c) the pH of the solution is adjusted to between 7.5 and 10.5 by adding acid or base (lye), and d) the solution is separated from undissolved constituents, for example by decanting. In this way it is possible, in a simple manner and using naturally occurring raw materials or by products from their treatment in preparation for recovering salts, to prepare an agent which, when added to the polluted water in very small concentrations, brings about a substantial improvement in the appearance, odour, etc. of the water.
