PURPOSE:To produce a base material for a constant polarization optical fiber without requiring machining in producing the base material for the optical fiber by making use of vapor phase axial deposition method by rotating a starting material at the angular speed varying periodically. CONSTITUTION:A dummy quartz bar 21 and a transparent glass bar 22 are connected by welding to constitute a starting member 20, and a burner 23 is disposed toward the connected end part of the bar 22. While the bar 21 is rotated at the angular speed varying periodically with the 1/2 turn thereof as one cycle, fine particles of glass are sprayed from the burner 23 to the bar 22; at the same time, the bar 21 is pulled in the axial direction of the bar 22 to allow a porous base material 24 to grow. The changing of the angular speed is accomplished by utilizing the combination of an elliptical gear 25 and a circular gear 26 and rotating the bar 21 by the belt 27 wound thereon. A base material consisting of a core part 22a and a clad part 24a is obtd. |
