PURPOSE:To produce a high chromium molten metal with inexpensive raw materials and small energy by injecting powdery and granular chromium oxide together with non-oxidizing carrier gas into the molten iron in a refining vessel, and supplying further a carboneous material separately into the molten iron then refining the molten iron. CONSTITUTION:A molten iron 5 is charged into a body 1 of a converter. Chromium ore or preliminarily reduced chromium ore or powdery and granular chromium oxide consisting of a mixture composed of said ore and a flux such as CaO is injected by non-oxidizing carrier gas such as inert gas or gaseous nitrogen into the body 1. A carboneous material such as coal, coke or the like is supplied separately from said material into the furnace and oxidizing gas such as oxygen or the like is blown through a top blowing lance 4 or bottom blowing tuyere 2 into the furnace, where the ore is refined with said carboneous material as a heat source and reducing agent and the high chromium molten metal contg. <40% Cr is produced. It is also possible to perform refining by injecting the chromium oxide, etc. or the stirring gas through said tuyere 2.
