It is known that many substances form a solid layer on the outside during drying, so that the moisture enclosed on the inside cannot escape, or can only slowly escape, to the outside. To prevent this, the material to be dried must be kept in motion during drying. This motion must be very rapid and therefore follow a short back and forth path with rapid vibrations. However, if such vibrations are to be successful, they must change their direction, and the material to be dried must therefore intermittently vibrate horizontally and vertically; in many cases the material to be dried would nevertheless become solid if the rhythm of the vibration were not varied. Many substances need, during drying, a diffuse rhythm of the horizontal and vertical vibration, while other substances require a harmonic trend for rapid drying. The rhythm of both directions of vibration and further other substances must alternately vibrate harmonically and then vibrate non-uniformly and diffusely. For each substance to be dried, its own program of the vibratory drying can be set up and stored in a computer, and the vibratory drying can then be controlled by the computer as desired.
