In the reclaiming of indiarubber, fibre-free scrap in the disintegrated solid state is heated and subjected to the action of oxygen to promote plasticization of the material. The oxygen may be supplied by using a compound yielding oxygen under the conditions of treatment, e.g. sodium perborate, but it is preferred to treat the rubber with a mixture of air and steam under pressure. The process may be applied as a step subsequent to the known acid or alkali treatment, and the material is then subjected to the usual mechanical finishing treatment. A container for use in the oxygen treatment is described, and consists of a number of spaced compartments, the whole being made of perforated sheet metal. Specification 8992/12, [Class 70], is referred to.
|
