In boiling water reactors having a reactor core (2) and a reactor pressure vessel (3) enclosing the latter at a distance, it is usual to provide coolant circulation in the annular space (6) between the reactor core (2) and the reactor pressure vessel (3) by means of a pump (15) seated in a horizontal partition (16). Arranged in the partition (16) is at least one valve (24) which closes an opening (27) situated parallel to the pump (15) in terms of flow, as long as the pump (15) is operating. The opening (27) improves the natural circulation in the case when the pump fails. <IMAGE>
