PURPOSE: To improve the thermal shock resistance by blending a refractory raw material with a mesophase pitch and baking the resultant mixture under a pressure. CONSTITUTION: A high-melting refractory raw material of >=90wt.% excellent in corrosion resistance such as an oxide, a carbide, a glass, a metal or carbon is blended with a mesophase pitch, soluble in organic solvents, having a mixed phase comprising a crystal phase or the crystal phase and an amorphous phase and <=30% weight loss in baking at 800 deg.C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere as a binder and the resultant blend is then baked at 900-1700 deg.C under a pressure. Thereby, the refractory containing carbon is obtained. |
