Coating graphite moulds, for use in steel casting - with slurry of water and fused silica

Castings are obtd. using a graphite mould by coating the casting surfaces of the mould with a slurry of water and fused silica. The fused silica has an average particle size of 5-30 mu. The mould is held at 1700-232 degrees C. The mould cavity is then filled with molten steel.
