In the present invention, using a byproduct gas generated by an iron manufacturing process as a calorimetry subject gas, the refractive index and speed of sound in the byproduct gas are measured, a refractive index conversion heat quantity QO is calculated from the value of the refractive index and a speed-of-sound conversion heat quantity QS is calculated from the aforementioned speed of sound, an error heat quantity QCO is calculated using a value selected in a rnage of -0.08 to -0.03 as a heat quantity conversion coefficient ζ by equation (1) on the basis of the concentration XCO of carbon monoxide gas included in the byproduct gas, and the heat quantity Q of the byproduct gas is found using a value selected in the range of 1.1 to 4.2 as a correction coefficient α by equation (2) on the basis of the refractive index conversion heat quantity QO, speed-of-sound conversion heat quantity QS, and error heat quantity QCO obtained above.
