A base for ointments and creams to be used in dermatology, and having to a very high degree, a capacity for hydration, contains 0.6-15 wt.% (pref. 1-10wt %) of the total wt., of microfibres with an extremely high specific surface area. The microfibres contain substances which act on the skin. Pref. they are of synthetic material, esp. polyethylene. The base contributes considerably to the hydration and smoothing of the skin. It can prevent the complete drying out of the cream which can occur with conventional bases containing water, fat, wetting agents, etc.
