A process for separating magnetisable and non-magetisable particles by means of a magnetic roll, characterised in that separation is effected in a liquid medium. Apparatus for use in the method comprises a liquid bath 2 within which the magnet roll 5 is disposed with the separation zone submerged, and chute means 8 for ducting a stream of liquid and particles to the magnet roll. The liquid flow rate is adjusted by a valve 4 to provide the desired particle feed velocity to the magnet roll. The liquid level in the bath is maintained constant by an overflow device 16.
