PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for a character pattern memory by storing a center of gravity coordinate of a stroke and connecting information between strokes at each stroke of a character and using the information to recognize a manuscript input character thereby recognizing the inputted character including variation of number of strokes. CONSTITUTION:A dictionary memory 6 of an on-line manuscript character recognizing system stores presence or absence flag relating to each stroke of a character, the center of gravity coordinate of a single stroke and the center of gravity coordinate of a combined stroke while being connected to the next stroke. Furthermore, a manuscript input character pattern on a tablet board of an input section 1 is processed by a pre- processing section 2 and the center of gravity coordinate of each stroke is extracted by a center of gravity coordinate extracting section 3 of each stroke from the pattern after pre-processing. Then a distance calculation, stroke corresponding processing section 4 compares the center of gravity coordinate information of the standard character stored in the memory 6 corresponding to each stroke. Moreover, a similar character identification section 5 identifies the similar character based on the result of comparison, the result is displayed on a display section 7 to recognize the input character including variation of number of strokes.
