MANUFACTURE OF GLASSY CARBONACEOUS MATERIAL

PURPOSE:To manufacture the titled hard and dense material contg. no pores and having no gas permeability by calcining and carbonizing a thermosetting resin cured in a frame made of a material having specified critical surface energy. CONSTITUTION:A frame at least the surface of which is made of a material having <=70dyn/cm critical surface energy such as polypropylene, polytetrafluoroethylene or polyethylene terephthalate is used. A thermosetting resin such as liq. modified furan resin is charged into the frame and cured. It is preferable that the thermosetting resin can absorb >= about 20wt% water when the Bruckfield viscosity at 25 deg.C is about 300-8,000P. The cured resin is calcined and carbonized at >=800 deg.C in an inert atmophere to manufacture a glassy carbonaceous material.
