PURPOSE:To obtain an alkali hydroxide soln. having high concn. at high current density by dividing an electrolytic cell into cathode and anode chambers with a prescribed cation exchange membrane, feeding an aqueous soln. of an alkali metallic salt to the anode chamber, and carrying out electrolysis while holding a vapor phase part on the back side of a cathode. CONSTITUTION:A solid polymer electrolyte is formed by bonding a catalytic electrode to a cation exchange membrane. An electrolytic cell is divided into cathode and anode chambers with the electrolyte, and an aqueous soln. of an alkali metallic salt is fed to the anode chamber. Neither water nor aqueous alkali hydroxide soln. is fed to the cathode chamber from the outside. Electrolysis is then carried out while holding a vapor phase part on the back side of the catalytic electrode in the cathode chamber.
