A method of transferring a polymer suspension composed of solid polymer particles and >=1 diluent is described. The diluent is an inert hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon. The suspension is introduced into a reservoir maintained above atmospheric press., sufficient to maintain it in the liq. state. The suspension is then made to pass in series through an elongated and jacketed first heating zone of relatively small dia., and a second elongated and jacketed heating zone of greater dia. than the first zone. Heating is by vapour, which can be water, and which vaporises the diluent. The vapourised diluent and dry polymer particles pass into a sepn. zone. The suspension is introduced continuously into the first heating zone, and the rate of flow is regulated through the quantity of heat supplied to the first zone. The method permits continuous transfer of a polymer suspension, which is not pulsatory, and does not need an intermittently functioning piece of equipment. Obstructions in the heating zone are not caused.
|
