<p>Compsn. contg. a cross-linked, solid polymer, which is swellable in the presence of water, is obtd. by polymerising an equimolar mixt. of maleic anhydride and indene and 0.01-10 wt. % (wrt the maleic anhydride and indene) of a cross-linking monomer having polymerisable CH2=C=groups. The polymerisation is effected in an inert organic diluent, in the presence of a free radical initiator and at 0-100 degrees C. The pref. cross-linking agents are divinylbenzene, methylene-bis-acrylamide, triallyl cyanurate and 3,9-divinyl-2,4,8,10-tetraoxospiro (5,5)-undecane. The polymers are excellent aq. thickening agent and suspension agents used in products such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, washing products and polishes and for applications such as applying latex coverings, printing of textiles, well drilling and water purification.</p> |
