PURPOSE:To confirm simply focusing by providing a light transmitting part and a light opaque part as a mark for focus detection to the part at the outside of a picture region of an original to be read used by a picture processing unit. CONSTITUTION:A focus detection mark 12 is provided along one side of a video region 11 or plural sides at the outside of the video image region 11 formed on the original 10 such as a microfilm. The focus detecting mark 12, as shown in Expanded view, consists of the light transmitting part 12a and the light opaque part 12b arranged alternately in an equal interval (a) slits are formed. Furthermore, a file detection mark 13 and a page detection mark 14 are provided at the outside of the video image region 11. The focus is detected simply by reading the focus detection mark 12 having a specific spatial frequency like this by means of an image sensor such as CCD.
