Starch-based superabsorbents are extended by being mixed with highly modified starches of low molecular weight. The dextrinized starches cooperate synergistically with the superabsorbent and, in association with this, permit dilution without any corresponding reduction in the water absorption. Even if the main application of the mixtures is the absorption of water-containing liquids, they yield soft, uniform gels on hydration, which gels can be used as high-class thickeners.
