PURPOSE:To improve the durability of an electrode by forming an intermediate layer of a mixture consisting of specified percentages of Ti oxide and/or Sn oxide and oxides of one or more kinds of metals such as Al and Ga between the substrate of the electrode and a coating of an electrode activating substance. CONSTITUTION:An intermediate layer of a mixture consisting of 95-60wt% Ti oxide and/or Sn oxide and 5-40wt% oxide of at least one among Al, Ga, Fe, Co, Ni and Ti is formed between the substrate of an electrode such as the Ti substrate and a coating of an electrode activating substance contg. a Pt group metal or its oxide. A mixed soln. contg. chlorides or other salts of metals for the intermediate layer is applied to a metallic substrate and heated to 350-600 deg.C in an oxidizing atmosphere to form an intermediate layer of mixed oxides, and an electrode is obtd. by coating the intermediate layer with an electrode activating substance. The intermediate layer contg. rutile type oxide as a base bonds firmly the electrode activating substance to the metallic substrate and improves the durability of the electrode. |
