PURPOSE:Retinol or retinyl acetate is brought into contact with triphenyl phosphonium salt to effect reaction, then brought into contact with glyoxylic acid in the presence of an alkali to effect reaction whereby the titled compounds of which parts are novel are obtained inexpensively with industrial easiness. CONSTITUTION:Retinol or retinyl acetate of formula I (R is H, COCH3) is subjected to catalytic reaction in the presence of triphenylphosphin and aqueous hydrogen halide or a triphenylphosphonium salt of formula II (X is halogen) in an organic solvent, followed by reaction with glyoxalic acid in the presence of alkali to give the objective compound of formula III (wavy line means cis or tran isomerism). The cis isomer of formula IV is novel, important as a synthetic intermediate of carotinoids and can be expected as a carcinostatic agent. The separation of the compound of formula IV from the compound of formula III can be readily done by means of silica gel column chromatograhy.
