PURPOSE:To easily measure the axial shift of a specimen to be measured, by placing a reference specimen and a specimen to be measured between two polarizers forming a Nicol optical system to detect the intensities of transmitted lights of both specimens and referring the shift in the absorbing angle of the reference specimen. CONSTITUTION:A Nicol optical system is constituted by arranging a light source 1, polarizers 3a, 3b of which the polarization axes are mutually crossed at right angles and a light receiver 4 on one axis. A specimen 10 to be measured is held by a holder 11 so as to cross said axis at right angles and moved on a rail 37 by a feed mechanism consisting of a motor speed reducer 30, belts 32, 35, pulleys 33, 34 and rollers 36, 38 to continuously measure the intensity of transmitted light at first. Next, the specimen 10 is detached and the reference specimen 20 formed from the same lot of the specimen 10 is pinched by a holder 21 and the relation of the transmissivity and rotary angle in each direction is calculated while a knob 65 is rotated and a shift angle phi is calculated from a position where transmitted light becomes min. By this method, the shift angle of the axis of the absorbing axis of the specimen 10 to be measured can be measured accurately and easily by referring said data.
