PURPOSE:To improve the recognition accuracy by generating plural projected images by applying a slide independently, respectively, without fixing an expanse of the vertical direction and the horizontal direction, and deriving a degree of similarity to a standard pattern. CONSTITUTION:In case of a normalization processing 16 of a position and a size, a position of an unknown data is corrected, also the unknown data is projected to nine pieces of rectangular representation areas in which expanses of the vertical direction and the horizontal direction are different, and a correlation value of their data and a standard data is derived. Subsequently, the maximum one is selected from in said correlation values by executing a maximum value detection processing 18, and it is set as a correlation value of the unknown data. A category to which the standard data used for obtaining this correlation value belongs is determined as a category of its unknown data (unknown character), and it becomes an output 19 of a recognition result.
