PURPOSE:To perform automatically and continuously multi-layer welding without halting it at every pass or layer by utilizing a welding arc as a detecting sensor, grasping a state of a groove, and betermining the number of passes in each layer and the profile position of a welding torch. CONSTITUTION:A welding electrode 5 supported through both moving mechanisms 4Y, 4X of a high direction (Y axis) and a groove width direction (X axis) by a welding truck 3 which can move along a groove 2 with respect to a base metal to be welded 1 is moved along the groove line while being oscillated in the groove 2. At the same time, an arc length is controlled to a prescribed length in the Y axis direction. In this case, a displacement (ex) in the X axis direction of the electrode 5, a displacement (ey) in the Y axis direction, and a displacement (ez) in the truck direction (Z axis) are detected 20, 21 and 22, respectively. Also, a welding power source 7 is connected between the electrode 5 and the base metal 1, and by an arc voltage detector 8 and a welding current detector 9, a detected value of one of them is used for controlling the arc length in the Y axis direction in accordance with the power source 7.
