PURPOSE:To obtain the titled latex with no quality variation among lots, stable for a long period, suitable for microtiter procedure, by polymerization of styrene in the absence of emulsifier to prepare polystyrene suspension followed by crosslinking treatment thereof then chlorination treatment of the resulting polymer. CONSTITUTION:First, styrene is polymerized, normally in an aqueous medium, in the absence of emulsifier, under a weakly alkaline condition pref. at a pH 7.1-7.8 using, as an initiator, persulfate such as potassium persulfate, to prepare a polystyrene suspension. This suspension is then heat-treated pref. at a pH3- 6.8 (i.e. under a neutral or acidic condition) to prepare polystyrene particles containing crosslinked polystyrene ones, which are then subjected to chlorination treatment to obtain the objective latex. Said chlorination treatment is preferably carried out at 10-60 deg.C for 60-360min, resulting in a chlorination degree 10- 30% in weight.
