PURPOSE:To improve the strength of coupling between an exhaust pipe and an outer casing, by a method wherein the exhaust pipe, to which a seal member having a female tapered part is engaged with the outer casing of a muffler, and the male tapered part of a second seal member is forcibly pressed in the female tapered part to secure the male tapered part to the exhaust pipe. CONSTITUTION:An outer casing 2 of a sound absorber 1 is formed by a forming sound absorbing material, and an opening part 3a having a tapered-off inner peripheral surface is formed in the inner side of a front end part 3 protruded toward the front. A first seal member 5 having a female tapered part 5b is inserted into the rear end part of an exhaust pipe 4, and the right and left split bodies of the outer casing 2 are coupled together in a condition to position the first seal member 5 between the nip formed by the bodies. Thereafter, a second seal member 6 is inserted along the exhaust pipe 4, and a male tapered part 6a of the second seal member is forcibly pressed in the female tapered part 5b of the first seal member. With this, an annular stopper 8 is forced into press contact with the front end part of the second seal member 6, and the stopper 8 is welded to the exhaust pipe 4. |
