A tread element for a moving pavement or an esclator has a tread plate (2) adapted to receive the person to be transported. The tread plate (2) has on at least one of its longitudinal edges a nosing or edge strip (3) introduced into it and secured to it. To secure such a nosing (3) over its whole length to the tread element, the nosing (3) engages along its two longitudinal edges (3a,3b) in each case below a part (6,7) of the tread plate (2). Also, between its two longitudinal edges (3a,3b) thus secured, the nosing (3) is rigidly secured by screws (10) from below to the tread plate (2). A warning strip of differently coloured nosing may be inserted in the tread plate surface. By virtue of this construction, so- called compact steps whose tread plate (2) is together with all its other support elements a single die- casting, does not have to be completely removed and replaced in the event of a breakage of the tread plate ribbing in the outer zone of the tread plate (2).
