<p>An appts. for casting a thin strip of metal, alloy or metalloid comprises at least one single-turn inductor(11) with a first part(26) for shaping the melt into a strip and an upstream second part(31), contained solely by the electromagnetic field. The second part defines a air space containment zone with a crosssectional area that is at least five times that defined by the first part, so that the area of the sump top is much greater than the strip area. There are pref. two mutually isolated and independently powered single-turn inductors. The strip is pref. no thicker than 0.75 inch and a current applicator frequency control provides a current penetration depth in the melt of not more than 1/4 strip thickness.</p> |
