An operating mechanism for a vehicle door has a power actuator (22, 24) acting through a rotary clutch mechanism comprising coaxial rotary members (34, 42) which are urged together by a spring (38) so that engagement elements (44, 46) transmit the actuator torque to operate the door. The engagement elements comprise inclined surfaces which, if a sufficient torque is applied, allow the two members to separate against the spring force and to rotate relative to each other. In the event of malfunction of the power actuator, therefore, manual pressure can be applied to the door to open it. Re-engagement of the rotary members occurs when the engagement elements are returned to their position of engagement. <IMAGE> |
