PURPOSE:To produce an aromatic polyester fiber having high tenacity and modulus, by using an aromatic polyester having a specific flow temperature and exhibiting anisotropy in molten state, and melt-spinning the polyester with an extruder-type spinning apparatus substituting the atmosphere of the feeding zone, etc., with an inert gas and decreasing the oxygen-concentration at the charging zone of the apparatus. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic polyester having a flow temperature of 280-380 deg.C and exhibiting anisotropy in molten state is melted and spun with an extruder- type spinning apparatus. In the above process, oxygen concentration of the zone to charge the polyester to the extruder is decreased to <=5vol% by substituting the atmosphere of the feeding zone and if necessary its surrounding with an inert gas such as nitrogen gas, etc., or evacuating the atmosphere and then substituting with an inert gas.
