PURPOSE:To detect assuredly even a pattern having the faltering or the stagnation of a pen by checking the possibility from the value obtained through a distance calculating part for a fact that a termination candidate is equal to a termination and changing the termination detecting parameter based on the result of said checking. CONSTITUTION:Receiving a termination candidate detecting signal C2 from a detecting part 2, a minimum value circuit 21 reads the distances between the input patterns obtained by a time point E' and all standard patterns out of a distance calculating part 5 to obtain the minimum distance. A comparator 22 compares said minimum distance with the prescribed threshold value. Then it is decided that the possibility is small for a fact that a termination candidate is equal to a termination when the minimum distance is larger than the threshold value. Thus a parameter L2a of a termination detecting parameter memory part 23 is sent to the part 2. The part 2 uses the parameter L2a uses as the termination detecting time width for detection the termination. When the minimum distance is smaller than the threshold value, it is decided that the possibility is large for a fact that the termination candidate is equal to the termination. Thus a parameter L2b is sent to the part 2, and the termination is detected in the same way.
