PURPOSE:To reduce the coefft. of thermal expansion of an Mg alloy and to improve the strength, wear resistance, durability and workability by reinforcing the Mg alloy with alumina fibers contg. SiO2 and having a specified crystal structure. CONSTITUTION:Alumina fibers consisting of <=10wt% SiO2 and the balance essentially Al2O3 having a crystal structure with a delta-Al2O3 base are compression-molded as reinforcing fibers to form a molded body having a prescribed bulk density. The molded body is placed in a mold, and a molten Mg alloy is charged and solidified to obtain an alumina fiber reinforced Mg alloy having an Mg alloy matrix. The preferred amount of the molded body of alumina fibers is about 10-20vol% and the preferred delta-Al2O3 content in the alumina fibers is >=50wt%. Since the special reinforcing fibers are used, the reaction of the Mg alloy with the fibers can be avoided, so the strength and wear resistance can be improved.
