PURPOSE:To obtain a measuring instrument which can measure simultaneously a moisture permeation rate and moisture absorption rate by diffusing all the evaporating material evaporated from an evaporation tray into a material to be inspected so as to be absorbed or permeated into or through said material, replenishing instantaneously the evaporating material corresponding to the evaporation rate by an automatic replenishing device and maintaining the amount of the evaporation material in the evaporation tray always at a specified amt. CONSTITUTION:The fats 6 in a sealing tray 6 act to provide sealing between the upper space of the evaporation tray sand the outside world. All the moisture evaporated from water 4 in the evaporation tray 5 diffuses into the material 8 to be inspected and is absorbed into the material or is finally permeated therethrough so as to dissipate into the outside world from the upper part of a cylindrical body 9. The water corresponding to the evaporating moisture is permeated into a ventilation pipe 17 when the water level in the tray 5 decreases and detaches from an air permeable waterproof membrane 16 at the top end of the pipe 17; at the same time, the water in the automatic replenishing device 13 is replenished through a conduit 15 by which the water is maintained always at the specified level. The moisture absorption rate is therefore obtd. by measuring the weight of the material to be inspected before the moisture absorption and the weight after the lapse of the specified time from the change in the scale of a spring scale 11 and the moisture permeation rate is obtd. by reading the replenishing amt. by the automatic replenishing device 13 with a scale 14 and calculating the difference between the replenishing amt. and the moisture absorption rate.
